Stay Sharp: What You Need to Know About Bank Jugging

new crime trend

A new crime is on the rise, and USF Credit Union wants to help you stay safe.

Law enforcement across the country is warning about a growing crime trend known as bank jugging—where thieves target people after they take out cash from banks or credit unions.

According to Credit Union Times, both federal and state police are urging everyone to stay alert as this trend continues to grow.

What Is Bank Jugging?

Bank jugging happens when criminals stake out credit unions, banks, or ATMs, looking for people who withdraw cash. Once they spot a target, they follow—sometimes across town—to a second location like a grocery store, gas station, or even home. When the person is distracted or the cash is left unattended, they strike.

While these crimes are often non-confrontational, they can be financially devastating and easily turn dangerous. Staying alert and informed is the best way to stay one step ahead.

How to Protect Yourself

You don’t need to be fearful, but a little awareness goes a long way. Here are simple ways to reduce your risk:

1. Scan Your Surroundings
Before and after using a branch or ATM, look around. If something feels off, trust your instincts.

2. Keep Transactions Private
Avoid handling or displaying cash in public. Use a bag or envelope to store money discreetly.

3. Mix Up Your Routine
Change the time and place you visit the branch. Predictable patterns make you easier to follow.

4. Go Straight Home
After a large withdrawal, head home first if you can. Don’t leave cash in your car, even for a short stop.

5. Call for Help
If you think someone is following you, don’t go home. Drive to a public place or police station and call 911.
